Day 10 of the Advent-ure Calendar

Day 10: Penn Brewery St. Nikolaus Bock Beer

Murray is unsure about this one.
Murray is unsure about this one.

A winter bock bier, exciting! Well maybe not that exciting, but we haven’t tried a bock bier yet in this calendar so we are excited for something different. The website describes this as “a very rich, strong, malty lager, dark ruby in color with notes of chocolate and roasted malts.”

REFLECTIONS

Beard & Broad
Beard: Twas the 10th day of Christmas Advent-ure drinking and out came a bock bier.  I was looking forward to some nice fruity esters as this was our first bock, but was rather disappointed.  It comes off as a bock bier light.  It’s like St. Nikolaus, instead of giving treats or coal, just said meh, he’ll do it tomorrow.  Maybe.  Nothing special about this, nothing terrible either.  A perfectly middle of the road Christmas beer.

Broad: I was skeptical about this. The description to me just screams this will be a malty mess. But I was (mostly) wrong.  In the first sip I tasted delicious malt but then that’s where the flavor ended. I couldn’t really distinguish between any flavors, it actually ended up tasting bland.  There was nothing robust or warm about this. But I will say that I do like it, I just wish there was distinguishable flavors or some warm winter spice added. Actually, I just wish there was more of anything in this beer.

Adam & Alex
Adam: It’s bland. This beer should be called apathetic because there’s nothing there. I’m pretty sure this beer played the evil character in The Neverending Story. The Nothingness

Alex: This beer wasn’t bad, but it just taste like a beer to me. There was nothing special about it, and did not have an abundance of flavor. It also did not taste like Christmas beer.

Mez & Sam
Mez: The bock was one of the more unique beers up to this point. Full flavored that lasts, but that’s not a negative. It sticks with you but since it’s so good, you’re not mad about it.

Sam: I liked the malty-ness of it. I prefer malt over hops in my beer. But like everyone else I thought it was a little bland. My first initial taste was expecting this beer to have more punch and stick around on my tastebuds longer, but it doesn’t
