Day 10 of the 4th Annual Advent-ure Calendar

Day 10: Rhinegeist Brewery Dad Hoppy Holiday Ale

We’re back with another hoppy ale and one of our favorite cans, also a real solid beer name.  “This hoppy red ale balances crisp hops with juicy malts like a well worn flannel embraces the cold early dark days of winter.” So it’s not an IPA but a hoppy red ale which is great for spicing this list up! And again, a flannel can named Dad. Just perfect.

Reflections

Beard & Broad
Beard: I didn’t remember too much about this beer from years past but I really like it. It’s prob number 3 for me on the list of hoppy beers we’ve had so far, but it’s quite nice. It’s just about the perfect balance of hops and malt, and a great beer for winter if you’re looking for something that’s just a touch on the bitter side. And I’m 100% positive my dad owned a flannel shirt with the exact pattern from the can.

Broad: This beer is light, hoppy and very delicious. Maybe I’m remembering it wrong, but I could have sworn it was super bitter and hoppy last year. It’s not a beer I would choose to drink around Christmas time because it’s not spiced or warm but I do enjoy it. I would prefer it around fall. But I do love the can and the name so much so I would add it to the rotation based on those factors alone. Also the color of the beer is gorgeous as well.

Adam & Alex
Adam: This is better than I remember last year. I get some piney hops but not overwhelming. I feel like there is also some caramel in there or maybe some toffee. Before this advent calendar I never would’ve picked this out but I think I’ll rock some flannel and imbibe in a few more.

Alex: I have always liked Rheingeist’s Dad can, but in the past I remember not being a huge fan of the actual beer.  That changed this year though.  I like it a lot more than I remember.  It is hoppy, but not too hoppy that it overtakes anything else.  I would definitely drink this again.

Scott & Christa
Scott: Dad beer holds a special place in my heart.  This was the beer Christa had laid out for me to announce the arrival of our little man not too long ago.  It’s pretty crazy to think that in 21 years, after he stops drinking warm Natty lite, he could be on his own beer journey making great memories with friends.  Or he could hate good beer, continue drinking Natty and waste a lot of my money on 7 years of college with no degree.  Hopefully not the latter, but back to the beer.  It’s a great beer from a great brewery and the can is flannel so it’s a winner in my books!

Christa: This whole time, I thought what was printed on Rhinegeist’s “Dad” can was “Happy Holiday Ale” and I thought that was pretty cute. As it turns out, it actually says hoppy which makes a bit more sense as it’s very hoppy. I like the overall crisp and malty flavor and the slight hint of sweet cinnamon but I think the are better beers out there for me and my beer palette. But, I did use this beer as part of the reveal when I told Scott he was going to be a Dad, so it always holds a special, happy place in my heart.

Tony & Megan
Tony:  We’re gonna have the hop hop hoppiest good ole fashioned family Christmas!….Its hoppy, malty, some good holiday spice flavor, pretty well balanced. It gives me a cozy, wintery feeling, like I’m sitting by a fire in a log cabin as the snow falls outside. As someone who doesn’t like a lot of hops, I enjoy this one.

Megan:  A hoppy holiday ale indeed. This one is hop forward but not so much so that I can’t enjoy it. It has an amber hue and fits well with a cozy blanket as the description indicates. I’m searching a little for the Christmas flavors but I like it!!
