Day 14: Brewery Ommegang Lovely, Dark and Deep

Full disclosure: this gang loves Ommegang beers so I think we are all expecting big things from this one. This is their new seasonal winter beer. Per Ommegang’s blog: “Aromas of roasted malt and coffee with cream, coupled with subtle notes of chocolate and dark fruit from Ommegang’s house yeast prevail. Flavors of rich chocolate milk, and coffee and cream are impeccably balanced with restrained sweetness and hints of roastiness.”

REFLECTIONS

Beard & Broad
Beard: I’m a huge fan of Ommegang and this beer is right in line with everything else I’ve had from them. Notes of chocolate, coffee, raisins and cherries are what I get first, followed by more chocolate on the palate and an almost lightly salted dark chocolate finish. Initial flavors of a normal stout, but the finish is fruity with spicy esters and a pleasant dryness. Tastes like a stout, but drinks like a nice dry Belgian. This beer is incredibly flavorful but not the least bit filling. The best surprise so far in our Advent-ure, definitely looking forward to drinking much more of this beauty.

Broad: Ommegang can do wrong when it comes to delicious beers and they did it again with this one. This is my favorite beer we’ve had so far. I’m not the biggest stout fan but this one is light, smooth and flavorful. I taste chocolate, coffee and dark fruit. Its the perfect beer for a winter’s night cozied up on the couch. I wish I had more of this right now and this weekend I will be buying a lot of this.

Adam: I love this beer. I get a smell of coffee and baileys. The taste to me reminds me of a Smore. I get toasted marshmallow with chocolate and graham crackers. I want to drink this all night by a fire while watching old timey Christmas movies.

Mez: This was a beer that would be delicious no matter the season. Flavorful and delicious from beginning to end, I’m a big fan. 

Sam: I really liked lovely dark and deep. But then again I like anything by them. It wasn’t until like a minute after I took my first drink that I tasted the chocolate in my mouth.
