Deschutes knows beers, especially hoppy beers. We thought out of all the breweries in our calendar, this would be a Christmas or Winter IPA. According to the website, this is a festive winter ale. “Warm spiciness and tradition grace this bold winter ale. Intriguing, layered flavors unfold to reveal chicory, dried fruit and toffee notes with a hoppy kick to finish.” We are expecting an interesting combination of malt and hoppiness with a Christmas spice kick.
Day 5: Evil Twin Brewing Chistmas Eve At A New York City Hotel Room
Now this should be good, a Christmas beer by one of the most interesting breweries. If you don’t know the story behind Evil Twin, start by reading this article. Beard & Broad love Evil Twin beers and are on a mission to try every one. This is another one we found in Ithaca. Broad grabbed it as soon as she read the words Evil Twin and Christmas. After further reading the bottle we discovered it’s an Imperial Stout. In true Evil twin form, the website offers little information about their beers.
Beard & Broad love Belgian ales so naturally when we found this we had to grab it. Full disclosure: we found this in Ithaca, on a top shelf covered in dust. We fully expect for it to be a bit old, but Broad talked Beard into buying it. The brewery’s website states “this is the ideal beer to make a cold and chilly winter evening cosy.” That’s the kind of description I want to see for a Christmas beer.
Gingerbread + Beer? Say What? In our opinion, this is either going to be very tasty or terrible. Beard is picky about strong flavors in beer and Broad either loves or hates it. Shipyard’s website states that this beer is “a cookie in every bottle.” Read more
Now this is exciting: a Winter IPA! From Saranac’s website: “West End Winter IPA is hop-forward with citrusy, resinous hop flavor balanced with enough toasty and caramel malt backbone to warm even the coldest winter night.” Christmas beers are usually not hoppy so this should be very interesting beer to add to the mix. Side Note: we bought these glasses from the same place we bought the beer, Ithaca Coffee Company. If you’re ever in Ithaca, you must stop here. The coffee and beer selection is amazing and the tavern always has a great selection on draft.
Or as Beard likes to call it “Holiday Drinkvent Christmacalendar!” (he likes to combine parts of words into ridiculous shit) The last two years we have enjoyed an advent calendar full of gin aptly named, The Ginvent Calendar. It was a fun way to cap off every night (or morning…just kidding, we’re not alcoholics) by opening the little box to see what our gin was that day. Most of the time it was something we’d never had before, or at least didn’t recall having. Gin also happens to be our favorite spirit, so it was fun to get to try 25 different ones for a month.
