Day 22 of the Advent-ure Calendar
Day 22: Moerlein Christkindl Winter Warmer
We haven’t had a lot of beers from Moerlein. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, you’d think we would have tried more of their beers. From Moerlein’s website: “the balanced hop finish creates a subtle spice flavor sure to excite your taste buds and bring you that cozy, warm feeling for those crisp, wintery nights.” We’re expecting a German Christmas beer that is smooth and malty.
REFLECTIONS
Beard & Broad
Beard: I think I’ve had beer from Christian Moerlein before but I don’t remember it. This may be a good or bad thing. Initially, I found this quite nice. It was malty and full flavored, some nice esters from the yeast, but then I discovered an oxidized aftertaste. Per a previous post (learning!), that means it has a sherry, or cardboard-like flavor to it. Besides that bit of oxidation this is a nice beer. Flavors of slight spice, a little raisin and stone fruit, but still light bodied. Would definitely try this again in hopes of grabbing a fresh bottle.
Broad: This beer is not what I expected. It initially smells sweet, malty and almost belgiany. enjoy it but I can’t really distinguish flavors. It tastes like a light belgian winter ale. It’s malty, toasty although a bit skunky in the aftertaste. The more I drink the more I’m unsure about it but I would definitely try this again
Adam & Alex
Adam: I don’t know if I have Christmas beer fatigue or if I just don’t like this very much but it’s boring to me. All I get is cinnamon and ginger and cloves.
Alex: I feel like this was a standard winter/Christmas beer that we have had, some spices, but nothing special about it to mention.
Mez & Sam
Mez: Nothing about this beer makes sense. The Malts don’t work with the hops and it ends up being like 3 separate flavors, and not sure any one is great. It’s…okay. That’s the nicest thing I can say.
Sam: I like the moerlein. I liked the malt taste. I could probably have only one though because it got a little thick feeling.
