Broad’s Night Out at Cleveland Candle Co.

Broad’s Night Out at Cleveland Candle Co.
The Cleveland Blogger Group!

We all know that Broad is a crazy cat lady but what you may not know is that she is also a crazy candle lady. Our home is stocked with candles. She’s always burning them in every room and Beard can’t complain because the house does smell good and the home never smells like pets. So while she is very good at purchasing candles, she has never thought about making her own. When The Cleveland Candle Co. reached out to the local blogger community looking for attendees for an event, she immediately jumped at the opportunity!

The Cleveland Candle Co. was founded in 2014 with the first shop opening in Mentor. Less than a year later they opened a second store in Coventry. Finally, they opened up a third location this year on West 25th Street in Ohio City. They really pride themselves in all things local. 90% of their oils are sourced from Ohio. All the labels for their items are printed on recycled paper in Cleveland. Each item is handled with care and all candles are hand-poured one at a time.

Our group really got the whole experience at Cleveland Candle Co. We created one custom scented candle, 5 essential oil lip balms and 2 bath bombs. We started off the candle making class by going over the candle mixologist worksheet. You go over to the candle wall and smell all the scents and write down the ones you like on your worksheet. You also pick out your container (they chose the 8oz containers for us).

Now if you wrote down a million scents you liked like I did, the staff will help you choose the right mix. There were over 150 scent options for the candles! While I love candles, I am VERY picky about scents. I tend to dislike super sweet scents and scents that smells like food. I love scents that are woodsy, earthy and floral. I chose tobacco, patchouli, birchwood and jasmine. You also get to name your candle. Broad chose Opal Sandfalls. We joke that’s her indie rockstar alter ego’s name (yes we’re weird). We think Opal would smell exactly like tobacco, patchouli, birchwood and a hint of jasmine.

You then mix the scents (phthalate-free fragrance oils) in the little measuring tool they give you and it’s up to you which scents you want to use more of. You can really play around with it. I ended up focusing more on the patchouli and tobacco, used a moderate amount of birchwood and just a hint of jasmine. They then pour the wax in your container and you pour in the scent mixture. You stir for a few minutes and then you’re done! The candle does need time to set. So plan your day accordingly. Broad ran into her friend Lauren who just did the class with some coworkers then went to dinner and came back to pick it up.

While we were waiting for our candles to set, we took a snack break (we all brought snacks and wine and beer) and then moved to the bath bomb station. We had to go back to the candle wall and pick one scent for our bath bombs (there were some to avoid that just would not feel good on your skin). I wanted something fresh and clean and also relaxing. The scent she chose was “fierce.” It was super clean, fresh and relaxing. Kate from Greatest Escapist and I decided to swap a bath bomb so we would have two different ones.  It was easy (but also a lot of work, my arms were sore) to make the bath bombs. I’m not going to go through all the steps (go to the class!) but they had recipe cards for us and all the ingredients out for us. Tanya (also the owner) walked us through the steps.

After we were done with the bath bombs we moved on to making lip balms. Broad was especially excited about this part because she is very addicted to lip balms. She keeps them stashed in all her bags, in every room of the house, her car she just can’t get enough. The lip balms are made of beeswax, your choice of either shea or cocoa butter (Broad chose shea), a carrier oil (Broad chose Avocado oil because it’s full of collagen and its super moisturizing and finally your choice of essential oil. Broad chose eucalyptus because it reminded her of being in a spa. After we made the balms we did a little swap with each other so we could try some other scents.

Special thanks to Cleveland Candle Co. for having us! This was such a fun and different experience you really must try a class! You can head to the website for a for their schedule. It would be the perfect date night or girls night out.

*Disclosure: The Cleveland Candle Co. provided Broad with a complimentary workshop, in exchange for an honest review. As always, all opinions are 100% our own.*
