Day 6: Deschutes Brewery Jubelale

Deschutes knows beers, especially hoppy beers. We thought out of all the breweries in our calendar, this would be a Christmas or Winter IPA. According to the website, this is a festive winter ale. “Warm spiciness and tradition grace this bold winter ale. Intriguing, layered flavors unfold to reveal chicory, dried fruit and toffee notes with a hoppy kick to finish.”  We are expecting an interesting combination of malt and hoppiness with a Christmas spice kick.

REFLECTIONS

Beard & Broad
Beard: First off, Deschutes is one of my favorite breweries. Have had this one many times and it’s one of my holiday favorites. Nice toffee and caramel on the nose, roasty bready body, and a balanced bitterness to round it out. I was surprised to see that this is 65 IBU’s, but I guess the maltiness does mask the smooth bitterness. This is what I want from a holiday beer: malty, warming, full bodied.

Broad: I’m a fan of this beer. I taste a lot of warm, winter flavors. I taste chicory, toffee, and caramel flavors. I don’t taste any dried fruit described by Deschutes. This is about as malty as I would want my beer to be. I would definitely drink a few of these on a cold, wintery night.

Adam & Alex
Adam & Alex joint review: It’s ok. I get toffee. Maybe some like dried fruit. It’s ok but I don’t need any more of it. Not a memorable beer

Mez & Sam
Mez: Jubelale is a winter treat. I taste the spice of this beer more than anything else, and I love it. The beer provides the right amount of warmth with a smooth delicious finish.

Sam: Gross. Too bitter for me.
