Day 4: Kerkom Brewery Winterkoninkske Winter King

CSC_0027

Beard & Broad love Belgian ales so naturally when we found this we had to grab it. Full disclosure: we found this in Ithaca, on a top shelf covered in dust. We fully expect for it to be a bit old, but Broad talked Beard into buying it. The brewery’s website states “this is the ideal beer to make a cold and chilly winter evening cosy.” That’s the kind of description I want to see for a Christmas beer.

REFLECTIONS

Beard & Broad
Beard: Unfortunately this is terrible.  I’m sure it’s a good brew when it’s fresh, or at least aged correctly.  But this is old as shit and has obviously been stored under horrible conditions.  Oxidized as hell, tastes and smells like sweet cardboard.  Huge bummer because the description sounds delicious.  It’s imported by Shelton Brothers, which distributes greats such as Jolly Pumpkin, Mikkeller and Cantillon, so I refuse to believe this is what this beer is supposed to taste like.  But, as Billy Bob Thornton states in the eternal Christmas classic BAD SANTA, “They can’t all be winners can they?”  No, they certainly can’t Mr. Bob Thornton. They certainly can’t.

Broad: Terrible. Awful. I’m pretty sure it’s because it’s old, as this is not the typical tasty, Belgain beer I’m used it. I don’t taste any winter flavors or any distinct flavors at all. I would try this again if we had a fresh bottle.

Adam & Alex

Adam: Belgian beers do remind me of cold weather so I like this one but not as much as I was hoping. It’s flat and kind of syrupy. I get coffee and caramel.

Alex: I thought it was okay and as I trudged on it became worse. I am bummed out because I really like Belgian beers but this was not very good. It tasted flat so it may be because it’s old.

Mez & Sam
Mez: This skunk beer tasted like sewer water.

Sam: did not try it after our terrible reactions to it.
